SLSO Concert Samuel Barber's life and work were heavily influenced by his partner of 40 years, Gian Carlo Menotti. Together they lived north of New York City where they frequently hosted parties with academics and music luminaries. In his Essay No. 2, "written in wartime," Barber imbues the orchestra with a powerful range of emotional expression that finally culminates in a triumphant conclusion.
